Yin Yoga and  Yawn

Yin Yoga works on the Yin tissues, the web of connective tissue which is everywhere in our body. It lies within the inner layer of our skin, interpenetrates every bone, joint, organ, tissue and cell.   It allows our muscles and organs to smoothly slide upon each other. This continuous network is rich in sensory nerve endings providing us with the ability to feel our body as a whole.

Fascia is found throughout our body as a fiber and fluid based tri-dimensional web of connective tissue. When unrestricted, it allows our bones, muscles, organs, blood vessels and nerves to smoothly slide upon each other. This continuous fascial network is rich in innumerable sensory nerve endings providing us with the ability to feel our body as a whole.

Yin Yoga poses are held between 3 to 5 minutes to allow the connective tissue to elongate and rehabilitate.
The practice involves extensive use of a variety of props, blankets, blocks, straps, and bolsters to name a few.  Yin Yoga calms the mind and the nervous system, which enables us to turn inward, "yin-ward", and to focus on the rhythm of the natural flow of the breath.   The Yin postures are offered another dimension of balance with Restorative, (ie the "Yawn") yoga postures allowing for an increase in vagal tone and support of the parasympathetic nervous system.

These are "Ongoing classes" which may be attended by pass or walk-in.  All levels are welcome!

Restorative Yoga

bi-monthly offering

A full 2 hour treat offered bi-monthly as a reminder to take time for ourselves, and simply focus on letting go and letting be. Restorative Yoga invites the body to relax and rest deeply through passive, supported postures, enhancing realms of our parasympathetic nervous systems. By offering your body and mind time to rest deeply in stillness, the breath acts as a soothing balm of present intention for the mind, supporting the body's innate wisdom toward healing.  Within this quiet, safe space, lies an opportunity to investigate habitual holding patterns in your body and release tension and fatigue. As you learn to observe the sensations of your body without identifying with them, this "non-doing" acts as a window to the core of your being.  Turning deeper inward, you begin to realize how external perceptions are biased by internal emotions and sensations.
Supported postures are sustained for 5-10 minutes, invoking deepening states of relaxation as a portal to meditation.   Some Restorative offerings, are accompanied by a lovely sound baths, as created through the mesmerizing harmonics of Crystal Bowls or through electronic instrumentation and singing bowls.

Open to all, novice or experienced practitioners.

Morning & Evening Flow
After Newbies, then what?  For some, the skills acquired in Newbies I & II are the asana appetizers for moving forward into exploring other styles of Yoga or more challenging classes such as our "Flow" classes.  This class provides a 'bridge' from one side of the river to the other, much as we might move from 'calm' currents, into more challenging rapids. Here, you closely examine Sun Salutations A & B, to build strength and stamina in Flow sequences, yet be ever mindful of critical transitions and ways to modify alignment within your unique abilities.

These mindful morning practices, weave traditional and non-traditional Sun Salutations into creative sequencing.  Be ready to playfully explore a variety of asana excursions such as arm balances* and inversions*, balanced with the deeper, connective tissue release of Yin poses. Experience the calming effects of pranayama and mindfulness meditation, cultivating the power of presence and awareness.

This class is an invitation to revitalize and deeply nourish.

Yoga Therapy  by private appointment
Yoga therapy is a client-centered, comprehensive practice designed to support the body's natural ability to repair and find balance.  These private sessions are guided by an initial interview to assist in defining a client's therapeutic goals.

A variety of techniques may be employed to address the physical body, including Thai Yoga Therapy methodologies, traditional yoga postures, and fully supported restorative postures.  By utilizing supportive props, the benefits of Yoga Therapy are accessible even to those recovering from injury or illness.  Emotional and spiritual realms of being are supported through breath work, meditation, and guided imagery.  These complement the physical aspects of supported postures, aiding to balance the body and ease the mind.

Shawn has completed Level I & II studies in Therapeutic Yoga with Cheri Clampett and Arturo Peal, through the White Lotus Foundation, Thai Yoga Therapy with Phoebe Diftler of Los Angeles, and has received certification as a Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT).  Her 30 years as a provider of anesthesia brings a deep understanding of breath physiology and it's quieter subtleties.

Sandy brings keen eyes honed by years as a Physical Therapist to her private Yoga Therapy clients.  Starting with the breath as a basic parameter and guide to movement, Sandy offers insight as to how yoga brings awareness to our activities of daily living, on and off our mats.  Sandy has also received certification as a Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT).

JJ Morris competed a 300 hours Holistic Yoga Therapeutics training in Portland with Annie Adamson in 2017.  He enjoys working with clients toward discovering new ways of moving and understanding their body, as to experience a resurgence of energy and a lightness of spirit.

Jutta completed a three year training (1994-96) as a Breath Therapist, at the respected Ilse-Middendorf Institute for the Perceptible Breath, in Berlin, Germany.   Perception of  the breath, as the very nucleus of life, weaves gracefully  through her yoga teachings and her gentle touch as a massage therapist.  It is through breathing, sensing, and centering, by which she supports an integration of body, mind, and spirit.  Jutta has also received certification as a Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT).

Jutta will be on sabbatical until MAY 2019.

Appointments may be scheduled with our Yoga Therapists, Mon-Fri by email listed below, or contact form found at the bottom of the "class schedule" page.

I have been attending Shawn's classes over a 10 year period. Her ability to explain Yoga in the context of Yoga history, and physiology in a meaningful way makes her classes more than just another physical exercise experience. And, yet; her quirky humor makes us not take ourselves too seriously as we examine our own abilities to follow her lead. I always look forward to her workshops, and sessions because I always get something useful to add to my practice.
